Marie-Gabriel Biessy

1854 – 1935


Marie-Gabriel Biessy was born in Saint-Pierre-du-Mont March 25, 1854.  In 1876 he began his studies at l’École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under F. Clement, and in 1879 under Carolus-Duran in Paris.  He traveled extensively in America, England, Holland, Portugal and Senegal where he captured portraits and scenery of daily life.


Exhibitions include the Salon de Lyon, Salon de Paris and Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which warranted and honorable mention in 1883 and of which Biessy became a member in 1895.  An honorable mention and a bronze medal in were also received at the Exposition Universalle in 1889 and 1900.  Biessy became a chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur the same year and was awarded a gold medal at the Crystal Palace in London. 


Biessy also acted as Director of l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Caire for some time.  His work can be found in museums of Bordeaux and Buenos Aires.
